Survey on the ex situ conservation of native ornamental plants in Brazil

This work congregates the resultant information of the research in libraries and in the Internet on the state-of art of ex situ conservation of the Brazilian native ornamental plants, in 2008/09. The presented data congregate: name of the curator; denomination including family, variety and/or species; geographic origin and name of the keeping institution. The absence of one or more data was not impeditive to register the collection. The families of informed plants had totalized 104, in 24 institutions that had answered to the research. The result of this survey did not allow to identify collections in the states of Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and all the states of the region North, which implies in the lack of ex situ conservation for the major of species of the biomes “cerrado” and Amazon. The families well represented, with potentially ornamental plants in the Brazilian collections are: Bignoniaceae, Bromeliaceae, Cactaceae, Fabaceae, Liliaceae, Myrtaceae and Orchidaceae.
