Senescence of calla lily inflorescences: influence of different storages and postharvest procedures

Calla lily is used as cut flower due to favorable characteristics for floral arranging. However, the flower durability after harvest is reduced and few information about postharvest physiology of this species is available. The objective of this work was to analyze the changes that occur during the process of senescence in different postharvest procedures and storage conditions of calla lily. Experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of immersion of stem base during short distances of transport (25 minutes), different storage conditions and values of water pH for maintenance in cold room. The results show no need of immersion of calla lily base stems in water for transport although the maintenance in cold room (4°C) after the harvest shall be done in order to delay senescence. The use of different pH levels for the maintenance of stems during storage had no influence on flower postharvest. The period of 10 days for storage was excessive since durability after it storage was reduced.
