Vase life of Epidendrum ibaguense Kunth inflorescences treated with ethylene inhibitors

The goal of this work was to evaluate the influence of inhibitors from ethylene synthesis and action, including aminooxyacetic acid (AOA), aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) and silver thiosulfate (STS) applied in spray or in pulsing on the quality of cut Epidendrum ibaguense flowers. The inflorescences were harvested and immediately treated as follow: (1) spray with 1.0 mM AOA; (2) spray with 1.0 mM AVG; (3) spray with 1.0 mm ASA; (4) pulsing with 2.0 mM STS for 30 minutes; (5) spray with 1.0 mM AOA + pulsing with 2.0 mM STS for 30 minutes; (6) spray with 1.0 mM AVG + pulsing with 2.0 mM STS; (7) spray with 1.0 mM ASA + pulsing with 2.0 mM STS; and (8) spray + pulsing with deionized water (control). After the treatments, the inflorescences were kept in deionized water, which was replaced at every two days to avoid microorganisms growth. At the end of longevity, which varied according to the treatment applied, the inflorescences treated with AVG and AVG + STS had the largest percentage of flower opening, increasing by 49 and 88% compared to control. The rate of flower abscission was also affected by the treatments, by the eight day, in the control flowers the accumulated drop was 51%, which had initiated at the fifth day. The inflorescences treated with ASA, AOA, STS, AVG, STS + ASA, STS + AOA and STS + AVG had reduction on the abscission by 11, 39, 47, 71, 38, 61 and 86%, respectively. In addition to that, there was a delay of 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, and 8 days to start the abscission, respectively. Longevity of E. ibaguense was affected by the ethylene inhibitors, but except for the treatments with only ASA and AOA, the remaining treatments were significantly higher than the control. The STS, AVG, ASA + STS, AOA + STS and AVG + STS, had the longevity increased by 45, 76, 33, 38, and 104%. The use of AVG isolated or in combination with STS kept the quality and improved the longevity of cut Epidendrum ibaguense flowers.
