Insetos (Arthropoda, Insecta) em inflorescĂȘncias de Heliconia bihai (L.) L. (Heliconiaceae)

The species of genus Heliconia L. (Heliconiaceae) outstands for their inflorescences that, either erect or pendent, are much appreciated for their beauty and have being widely used in landscape design, once they demand low maintenance and are adequate as pot plants as well as garden plants. However, many insects groups (Arthropoda, Insecta) are associated to Heliconia, such as beetles (Coleoptera), ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), aphids (Hemiptera, Aphidoidea) and scale insects (Hemiptera, Coccoidea). Some Heliconia species accumulate exudates, water and floral parts in these bracts that form a micro habitat called phytotelmata which favors the occurrence of these insects. The objective of this study was to determine the faunistic indexes to orders of insects associated to Heliconia bihai (L.) L. inflorescences harvested in Paulista, state of Pernambuco, Brazil and identify, these insects, at family level. The insects were collected from 72 inflorescences and kept in alcohol at 70% for further identification. The data analysis was based upon the infestation, frequency, abundance and constancy indexes. The inflorescence infestation index was 100%. From the 759 insects collected, 87.6% belonged to the Diptera order, 4.4% Hymenoptera, 4.2% Coleoptera and 3.8% Hemiptera. The Diptera order showed the greatest values for infestation, frequency, abundance and constancy indexes. Was observed that 51.1% of the insects were dipterous the family Psycodidae (two morphospecies) and 19.5% of the family Tipulidae (one morphospecies).
