Costa Rica: the great world-wide exporting of foliages.


Costa Rica is a unique country in Central America, with high standard of living, and one of the largest ornamental production in the world. With a surface are smaller than Paraíba state it exported US$ 170,3 million in plants in 2005. Costa Rica´s main production is based on green and indoor plants, such as Dracaena, Aglaonemas and palm trees. It´s dynamic private sector has benefited from both the favorable historical background of the country in Central America, as well as support from the government to the sector. Far-reaching decisions in the 70´s have given the lead to the plant export as an optional ´non-traditional’ export crop, now ranking 6th of all agricultural exports.
