Eco-friendly ou flower killer? Compreendendo os efeitos negativos do óleo essencial na pós-colheita de Zantedeschia

Atualmente, existe uma demanda pelo desenvolvimento de tecnologias sustentáveis para a conservação pós-colheita de flores. O uso de produtos ecológicos, como os óleos essenciais, visa promover a sustentabilidade e diminuir a produção de resíduos tóxicos. No entanto, apesar de terem demonstrado eficácia em algumas espécies, no copo-de-leite (Zantedeschia aethiopica), foram observados efeitos negativos, como o estrangulamento do caule. Com base nisso, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de soluções preservativas preparadas com óleo essencial de eucalipto (Eucalyptus citriodora) na qualidade pós-colheita de copo-de-leite, analisando os processos bioquímicos e enzimáticos de senescência. Hastes florais de 50 cm foram colocadas em soluções com água pura (controle) e em concentrações variadas de óleo essencial (0,1%, 0,25%, 0,75% e 1,0%). As hastes foram mantidas em câmara fria a 10 °C por 10 horas, com avaliações a cada 2 horas. A cada avaliação, amostras de 5, 10 e 15 cm de haste foram coletadas para determinar o teor de sacarose. Após 5 horas, uma seção de 10 cm foi retirada para análises de microscopia eletrônica. Os resultados mostraram que o óleo essencial de eucalipto causou a destruição do sistema condutor das hastes, resultando na morte de todas as flores. O bloqueio no caule limitou a absorção de sacarose e estimulou a atividade de enzimas antioxidantes, levando à peroxidação lipídica (MDA) e ao aumento da atividade da superóxido dismutase (SOD) e da catalase (CAT).
