Any inclusion, exclusion, or modification of authors or changes in the initially presented order must be formally notified through an official letter signed by all authors (including the excluded author).
Article Formatting
The structure of scientific articles shall consist of:
a. Title Page:
- Title (in English and Portuguese);
- Author names and affiliations (indicated by superscript numbers “¹”; the corresponding author will be marked with “*”);
- Abstract (English) followed by Keywords;
- Resumo (Portuguese) followed by Palavras-chave.
b. Main Text:
- Introduction; 2. Materials and Methods; 3. Results and Discussion (combined or separate); 4. Conclusions; Acknowledgments; Author Contributions; Conflict of Interest Statement; Data Availability Statement; Statement on the Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process; References.
Notes:
-
a. Title: must be concise and present the general idea of the work. It is recommended not to use scientific nomenclature in the title, except for species that do not have an established common name.
b. Authors: the authors’ names must be listed after the title, continuously and centered. They should be written in full, with only the initials capitalized. The affiliation should follow the sequence: Institution/Department/City-State/Country. The corresponding author must be indicated: *Corresponding author: main email address.
c. Abstract: must be presented in a single paragraph, containing between 200 and 250 words, covering the following sections: introduction, objective, methodology, results, and conclusion. The abstract should not start with the statement of the objective. It must always be provided in both English and Portuguese versions.
d. Keywords and Palavras-chave: between 4 and 5 terms, and must not repeat words from the manuscript title. It is suggested that the first word be the scientific name of the studied species.
e. Footnote: do not indicate the origin of the work (e.g., if it is part of a thesis, dissertation, etc.). The funding source should be presented in the Acknowledgments section.
f. Introduction: present the information that guided the development of the work, always using updated references. The final paragraph must clearly state the objective of the study.
g. Material and Methods: avoid indicating the location (city, university, research institute, etc.) where the work was carried out, unless this information is essential for the discussion of the results.
h. Results and Discussion: may be presented either combined or separately.
i. Conclusions: may be presented as text or as a list. In the latter case, use hyphens for each item.
j. Scientific names: it is suggested that authors confirm the scientific names of the species at www.tropicos.org.
k. Author Contributions: cite the authors by their initials and specify each author's contribution. Note: this information must also be included in the Cover Letter.
l. Acknowledgments: mention the source of funding for the work or any particular acknowledgments, if applicable.
m. References: see the respective guidelines.

Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest, whether personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial, may arise during the submission and processing of an article. These conflicts may involve authors, reviewers, or editors, either explicitly or implicitly.
To prevent the occurrence of such conflicts and, above all, to avoid any impact on the evaluation and publication process of an article, the Editorial Board recommends that: a. The authors are responsible for the submitted text and acknowledge this by signing the submission letter. b. The authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any conflicts of interest that may have influenced their work. c. The authors should indicate in the manuscript, in the Acknowledgments section, all financial or other support (personal, corporate, etc.) that was used or applied to the work. d. Reviewers should inform the editors, and editors should inform the Editor-in-Chief, of any conflicts of interest that may influence their evaluations and assignments. When appropriate, they should decline the review request. |
|
Editorial Policy
The editorial policy follows the communication of research in the modus operandi of Open Science. The journal Ornamental Horticulture is coordinated by the Editor-in-Chief, who is directly assisted by the Associate and Assistant Editors. Additionally, for each thematic area, there are Area Editors who coordinate the processing of articles within their areas of expertise. The entire processing and publication process is online through the submission system, and the evaluation is carried out by qualified professionals using a double-blind review system. The journal provides guidelines for authors, which are essential for standardization and the quality of the publications. |
|
Plagiarism Policy
The Ornamental Horticulture journal uses the free plagiarism detection system from CopySpider (available for registration and download at https://copyspider.com.br/main/pt-br/download ), with a maximum similarity percentage of 3% (excluding references). We recommend that authors perform a preliminary evaluation before the submission process. In this case, higher percentages (up to 10%) are allowed only when the manuscript is extracted from a thesis or dissertation by one of the authors. Once similarity (including self-plagiarism) is detected, the manuscript will be returned to the authors with the analysis report, and will then be rejected and archived. |

Compliance with Open Science
|
This journal follows the Open Access model. Authors must complete and submit, along with the manuscript, the Open Science Compliance Form, along with the Title Page. This form asks for the following information: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program codes, and other materials underlying the manuscript's text should be properly cited and referenced; and (c) whether they accept open options in the peer review process. OH is continuously aligned with Open Science practices and, for this reason, adopts a position of constant improvement and updating of these practices. OH encourages the sharing of data and codes, allowing for the verification and replication of results, promoting transparency and research reproducibility. By mutual agreement between reviewers and authors, OH will publish the name of the editor(s) responsible for the manuscript review process in the final version of the approved article. |
Copyright
Authors of articles published in OH retain the copyright of their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is properly cited. Authors grant the journal the right of first publication under the CC BY 4.0 License. OH adopts the Open Access concept from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ): Open Access is a condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons or equivalent), allowing free and immediate access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or create links to the full-text articles, track them for indexing, transmit them as data for software, or use them for any other legal purpose. |
|
Intellectual Property and Terms of Use
All content in the journal and articles published by OH, unless otherwise specified, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License: CC BY 4.0. OH encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts, publishing them in personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided the complete citation to the journal's website version is included. We also encourage authors to share updates and publications made on OH's social media. Our social media team has full rights to share and create scientific dissemination summaries in different visual and textual formats. The content of texts, citations, and references in the submitted and published works is the sole responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Editor-in-Chief or the Editorial Board of OH. |
|
Preprints
Submissions of preprints from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. Preprints from other servers will be evaluated by the journal editors. Articles will be subjected to peer review. |
|
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The Ornamental Horticulture journal aims to provide greater transparency and guidance for editors, reviewers, and authors regarding the use of AI tools and resources to maintain the ethics, integrity, transparency, and quality of publications.
a. Authors and co-authors must assume full responsibility for the content of their studies, including parts generated by AI tools. b. For authors: The use of AI tools and resources is strictly prohibited for writing the article, generating results, creating or altering images, or graphical elements. They can only be used to improve the language and readability of the article. c. AI tools should not be credited as authors in academic articles. All content generated by AI must be attributed to a responsible human author. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript. d. It is important to note that if AI tools are used, authors must disclose their use, and a declaration will appear in the published work. e. If the author has used AI tools and resources, they must include a section before the references titled "AI Tools and Resources Declaration in the Writing Process." In the declaration, authors should specify the tool used, the reason for its use, and how it was applied. f. For editors and reviewers: Reviewers should not use AI to issue their reviews. Any use of AI in the evaluation process should be clearly disclosed in the review form. |
|
Peer Review Procedures
The work received for publication is initially analyzed by the Editor-in-Chief regarding its alignment with the scope of the journal and its compliance with OH guidelines. The work is then forwarded to the Area Editor, who, after reviewing, sends it to at least two (2) reviewers selected from the journal's submission system. Using a specific form, the ad hoc reviewers provide suggestions, which are forwarded to the authors through the Area Editor and the Editor-in-Chief. The reviewers may also suggest approval or rejection of the article. If accepted, the review process may be repeated several times until the final approval of the text. A maximum period of 30 (thirty) days is established for each stage to ensure a prompt publication process. The journal uses the "double-blind review" process for evaluating its articles. All articles are handled confidentially and impartially, and neither authors nor ad hoc reviewers disclose/access personal information. The manuscript will only be sent for publication after approval from the authors, reviewers, Area Editor, and Editor-in-Chief. After approval, the manuscript is sent to the Layout Editor and Associate Editor for revision to ensure compliance with the journal's standards. After layout editing, the manuscript is returned to the authors for final approval, and only after the corresponding author's formal declaration is the article published. |
|
Declaration on Availability
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a declaration regarding the availability of data used and generated in the research underlying the text.
The data declaration for research can take three forms:
- URL address of the dataset;
- Statement that all data is available in the text;
- Indication that data must be requested from the corresponding author.
Processing Dates
The dates of receipt of the original article, revision, and acceptance, as well as the names of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor, will be informed in the final published version of the article. |
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)
These are fundamental elements that must be considered at all stages of the research process. The editorial team of OH, in addition to the authors publishing in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations for reporting information about sex and gender in the study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of the findings. Furthermore, OH observes gender equity policies in the formation of its editorial team. The use of inclusive language is essential to promote diversity, equality, and accessibility in scientific communication. We encourage authors to adopt linguistic practices that consider and respect gender, race, age, and other characteristics, thereby contributing to a more welcoming and equitable academic environment. |
Ethics Committee, Records, and Mandatory Checklists
When the research article involves human or animal subjects, authors must mention in the methodology section of the manuscript the ethics committee approval number from the responsible institution. Documents proving approval by the Ethics Committee may be requested during the review process. For more information, refer to: Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement. Systematic Reviews Systematic Reviews should only be submitted by invitation from the Editor-in-Chief of OH. Even then, only submissions of Systematic Reviews of any nature (Traditional, Overviews, Umbrella Reviews, and Scoping Reviews) will be accepted if they meet the following mandatory requirements: The PRISMA 2020 checklist statement, duly completed, including all its extensions where applicable. PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews or Open Science Framework. Submissions with a registration date later than the submission date of the article to OH will not be accepted. The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board reserve the right to reject articles that do not provide clear evidence that these principles were followed or whose methods are considered inappropriate for the use of humans or animals. Other issues will be resolved by the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial board. |
Publication Fee
All accepted articles will be subject to a publication fee. Please visit: Fees and Payment Guidelines in the Required Documents for Submission for more details.
The payment of this fee helps cover the operational costs of the journal. This fee will be mandatory for all works, regardless of whether the authors are members or non-members of the SBFPO, editors, or reviewers of the journal.
EXEMPTIONS: Foreign authors from low-income countries, based on the Human Development Index (HDI), who are unable to pay the publication fee, should contact the Editor-in-Chief (via email: editor.ornamentalhorticulture@gmail.com) for review of the request. A document with the author's own text, duly signed by all authors, with justifications for the exemption must be submitted. The journal will not use the publication fee as an obstacle to the publication of accepted articles, as it does not have commercial purposes. |
